Heavy Mechanical Complex Internship - Muhammad Umer's Portfolio

Heavy Mechanical Complex Internship

 Introduction

Under the branch of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commision (PAEC), which comes under Strategic Plans Division (SPD), Heavy Mechanical Compex is a job shop, capable of producing high quality and standardized products.

Main Difference Between HMC and HMC - 3

The major difference between HMC and HMC - 3, at the time of writing this, is HMC's foundry and forge works. On the other hand, HMC - 3 is highly specialized in CNC machining and most of its working happens on CNC machines.

Skills gained

I gained a lot of valuable experience during this internship, some of these include:
  • General Working of HMC
  • SolidCast software, used for casting simulations.
  • Heat treatment processes.
  • Code and Standards including:
    • American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME)
    • American Petroleum Institute (API)
    • American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
  • Non-Destructive Techniques (NDT) including:
    • liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)
    • Magnetic particle Testing (MT)
    • Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
    • Radiographic Testing (RT)
  • Destructive Testing (DT) including:
    • Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES)
    • Universal Testing Machine (UTM)
  • Conventional Machining and manufacturing approaches/methods.
  • Pickling and Passivation.
  • Forge Works and Foundry.
  • Pattern Making processes.

Certificate

HMC issues a certificate to its interns. Mine is following:

Conclusion

Although conventional, HMC possesses highly skilled labor force which allows it to make mechanical parts without the need of highly sophisticated machines or CNC machines while meeting the design and code standards.
