The "Hello World" of Blender. Years later, looking at it, yep, its terrible. But this was my first blender animation which I learnt from guess who? Blender Guru of course.
The animation is:
Features
The donut body is made by mesh editing and sculpting. The blue bubbles on top are made by sub-surface scattering. The sprinkles are made by geometric nodes and final touches are made in blender in-built compositor.
Short Comings
I created this animation years back. Now having developed some more skills in Blender, I can definitely see some short-comings in this:
- First of all. back then, I used Evee as the rendering engine as I did not have a strong machine back then for running Cycles.
- The major problem in this animation is lighting. Especially the sprinkles in the back, that are raining have little to no light to tell their color apart correctly.
- In the animation, the donut spins slowly when displaying the icing, but spins faster when showing the bottom, as to hide the lower part. This was done intentionally, but near the end of the spin, it slows down a bit short of the icing part, i.e., showing the bottom part more.
- the backlighting could use some intensity. Here, it is negligible.
- The lighting in the center hole of the donut is acting up. This is mainly because of irregular mesh near that region. Besides the center, there are some other regions where the light doesn't bounce off as it should.
- As Cycles was not used as the render engine, the shadow casted by the sprinkles cannot be seen.
- The texture used at the bottom part of the donut has a very high value of bump. The donut looks as if it had gone bad. Doesn't look appetizing in the least.
