Introduction
Mindstorm Studios is a Pakistan based mobile based game development platform. Every year, Mindstorm Studios holds its summer internship program by the name of M-Labs. During this internship, the game development skills of game developers are enhanced and the best thing about this internship is that, even if you are a complete beginner in game development, M-Labs will include you accordingly. Games are created in a group where different people are included with different tasks such as Game Programming, Game Development, and Game Art. My role, on paper, was Game Designer, but working with different people allows you to work on Game Programming and Game Art as well.
The Game We Created
During the internship, it is required to develop a game on a specified topic and submit it to the game studio where they grade the game and prizes are given to the position holders. In 2023, the topic of game development was Tower Defense while our Game's name was Island of Doom (you can't find the game on Play Store or any other store since none of the games are published there, instead they are published for grading alone, to Mindstorm studios).
Plot: Evil pirates are trying to steal your hard earned jewels and treasures. Use your handy cannon to invade off their attacks.
Game Mechanics
You have to tap on the screen to launch cannonballs at the pirates. You have limited cannonballs so you have to make every shot count. Pirates will seize your treasure (hence, Game Over) if you don't manage to fend them off quickly. The engine used to create the game is Unity (as was the restriction during this game jam) and the game is 2D and can be played in both portrait and Landscape orientations.
Certificate
M-Labs provides a certificate of completion to all attendees. During this ~2.5 months internship, interns are given proper classes in game development, programming, and arts in the first month, while in the remaining time, interns are given the time to create the game on the specified topic. My certificate of participation:
Conclusion
While not perfect, the game our team created provided a valuable experience to me in game development, programming, and arts.
